History and Facts

The School of Public Affairs is housed in a New York City Landmark

The School of Public Affairs (SPA) is located at 135 East 22nd St, a former Family Court building. The building has been fully converted and now houses meeting rooms, and offices for SPA and some college administrative functions.

SPA has established an outstanding record since its founding in 1994. We have the single most diverse full time graduate program in Public Administration in the United States, according to the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM). Our faculty are routinely cited in the press, consulted by government offices, foundations and nonprofit organizations, and published in the leading academic journals. Our students go on to rewarding careers as leaders and policy makers in education, health policy, government and nonprofit management.

In addition to its graduation programs – the MPA, the MSED, and the MSED in Higher Education Administration – the School has a growing undergraduate major in Public Affairs (BSPA). Students in all of our programs have access to a wide range of internships in the public and nonprofit sectors and have been highly successful in national awards competitions. In 2006-2007 SPA had Fulbright Fellows at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as two Presidential Management Fellows.

SPA has created several highly effective research centers, including the Center on Equality, Pluralism and Policy (CEPP), the Center for Innovation and Leadership in Government (CILG), and the Center for Nonprofit Strategy and Management (CNSM). The School has highly developed capacities in population studies, bringing together the resources of the CUNY Institute for Demographic Research (CIDR), the New York Census Research Data Center (NYCRDC), and the Baruch Survey Research Unit (BSRU).

The School has 45 full-time faculty and approximately 1,000 students.
